Leadership Builds Connections

Leadership students in the life skills classroom.

Maywood's Leadership class sets the tone for camaraderie and school spirit on campus. In addition to planning assemblies, spirit days, and fundraisers, they sometime visit Maywood's Life Skills class during 6th period to play games and help out in the classroom. Their teacher, Mindy Simonds, first introduced the two classes last year, and now it happens on a recurring basis. Both classes look forward to their next meeting and have forged friendships that reach outside the classroom.

The support staff who work regularly in the Life Skills class say the interaction has been nothing but positive for their students. Sabrina Wick Jensen, a paraprofessional who regularly works with one of our 7th graders, says "He used to hide when they first came to class last year, and now he gets so excited." Ms. Simonds gets hugs and fist bumps from Life Skills students in the hallways. Both classes look forward to their next meeting.

"It's heartwarming to watch our students interact both in and out of the classroom," says Principal Crystal Weik. "We're proud of the partnership and peer connections created by this opportunity. Our students care about each other and truly exemplify 'The Maywood Way - Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Respectful and Be Your Best'."
