Maywood Robotics Put Their Machines to the Test in Competition
Maywood's two Robotics teams competed at Baker Middle School in Tacoma over the weekend and gained some valuable experience presenting their creations. During the competition, each team had to present their robots to an interview panel, on a display board, and in competition with other schools.
Team "Total Chaos" entered this competition ranked 5th, after a previous outing at Hazen High. Their robot made it through three rounds of competition before being knocked out. They were still presented with the Innovate Award. Advisor Kevin Krein shared that this award "celebrates a team that thinks imaginatively and has the ingenuity, creativity, and inventiveness to make their designs come to life. This judged award is given to the team that has an innovative and creative ROBOT design solution to any specific components in the FIRST Tech Challenge game. Elements of this award include design, robustness, and creative thinking related to design.”
Maywood second team "Deep Charge" experienced more adversity, losing several of their matches, but they persevered and had a strong showing in their last round. What seemed like a frustrating day turned around when they were awarded the competition's Control Award, for "the team that demonstrates innovative thinking and solutions to solve game challenges."
This is Mr. Krein's first year as Robotics Advisor, and the team works with Liberty's team and parent mentors on a weekly basis. Principal Armstrong thanked Mr. Krein saying, "we greatly appreciate his dedication and the fact that we can make these opportunities available to our students."
