Maywood Welcomes Future 6th Graders

Orchestra getting ready to perform, "Welcome 5th graders" on the screen above them

Maywood welcomed 5th grade students from Briarwood, Maple Hills, Apollo, Challenger and private elementary schools to get their first glimpse of middle school Thursday, February 15. Our WEB leaders gave small group tours of the school, then the future 6th graders gathered in the Charger Cafe. Principal Erin Armstrong and Assistant Principal John Gardiner introduced themselves, as did Counselors Kristin Beasley and Tiffany Adler.

Students were then given an introduction to our music program, with performances from our Choir, Orchestra, and Band. Orchestra teacher Jana Dalpez encouraged students to "choose the sound you like best, whether it's your own voice or the sound of a particular instrument." She then gave a 5th grade volunteer his first cello lesson! Fifth graders also heard from current Maywood students about the various electives offered at school.

Ms. Armstrong said, "We enjoyed the opportunity to welcome 5th grade students to campus and share more about what they have look forward to in middle school.  Our future Chargers were a wonderful audience and they brought so much positive energy!  Thank you to the teachers and staff from Apollo, Briarwood, and Maple Hills for making this event possible.  We also appreciate all of our current students who led campus tours, shared their musical talents in performances, and spoke about their experiences in our student panel."
