Ms. Tolonen Awarded ISF/PTSA Grant for Living Voices

Staff members smile with ISF staff holding "Congratulations" banner

On January 31, representatives from the Issaquah Schools Foundation and the Maywood PTSA surprised Ms. Tolonen's 5th period class to announce she'd been awarded a grant to fund an upcoming Living Voices Presentation. As a result, the entire 7th grade will hear "Within the Silence," a performance about Japanese-American Internment during World War 2. It will coincide with our Washington State History unit, and aims is to bring to life an important part or our state's history.

"The Grade 7 team has presented this performance many times in the past and students routinely mention what an impactful experience it is," says Ms. Tolonen. Students will view the presentation in small groups and engage in a discussion with the actor afterward.

Principal Erin Armstrong adds, "We are grateful to the Issaquah Schools Foundation and Maywood PTSA for helping us to have the resources to bring history to life for our students!  This is a critical opportunity for our students to understand more about the experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II and make powerful connections with the learning that they are doing in the classroom. "
