Sculpture Class Deliver Large-Scale Pop Art Favorites

Pop art of treat sculptures

As second trimester wraps up, Samantha Veraya's Sculpture Class designed and unveiled an exhibit of their large-scale Pop Art works. It's currently on display for Maywood students to enjoy during lunch. Cheez-Its, Dots, Boba tea, s'mores and gum packs are rendered in a scale that would make any middle schooler envious (and dentists cringe). Students recycled boxes and packaging and worked either solo or in small groups to complete their projects.

Ms. Veraya is pretty proud of all the hard work her students put in to make the art come to life. "My personal favorite? The package of Extra gum that actually opens and closes like a gum package and contains aluminum foil-wrapped pieces of gum! The giant ICEE titled 'Brain Freeze' is a close second," she says. The class studied the Pop Art Movement that originated in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly the work of American sculptor Claus Oldenburg. Oldenburg's 'Typewriter Eraser' is currently on display at the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park.
