Basketball Handbook
WELCOME
Dear Parents/Guardians and Players,
We are excited to participate in another successful year of Charger basketball. There is a great deal of information that is very important for you to know regarding the procedures and intricacies of basketball. It would be good to have this on hand for a quick reference if you have questions. The printed calendar is a tentative schedule for practices. We sometimes get bumped for other school events, but your players will be made aware of these dates as soon as we hear about them.
We have high expectations for our players. It is their responsibility to be at all practices and games on time with the correct gear. Please read the handbook carefully and make sure you understand the material. If you have any questions regarding the contents, be sure to ask us in practice, or email us.

ELIGIBILITY
Basketball is a privilege. In order to participate in basketball at Maywood you must meet the following criteria:
- Emergency medical forms must be turned in.
- All students must have a current physical on file, pay a $50 sports fee, do online registration with printed confirmation and emergency authorization forms, and have a valid ASB card to participate in any Maywood sport.
- You must be passing all your classes.
- Behavior in school and practice must be appropriate.
- You must have 8 practices to be eligible to play in your first game.
- You are expected to attend all practices unless you are sick, have a Dr.’s appointment or a family emergency. Please let one of the coaches know why you were absent or if you know that you are going to miss a practice or a game. (Don’t rely on teammates.)
If these criteria are not followed it may result in probation or not being able to play in the game. If we have a problem with your behavior in practices or at games we will give you a verbal warning. If the behavior continues, we will give you a written warning that must be signed by your parent(s). If the problem still continues you will no longer be able to participate in basketball.
Grades will be checked within 10 days of the beginning of the season. If you have a failing grade, or your GPA is below 2.0, you will be placed on academic probation for 10 days. You may practice, but not compete in games during these 10 days. If after the 10-day probation you are still failing, you will not be able to participate in MMS basketball anymore whatsoever.
Practices
PRACTICE Schedule: MON / TUES / THURS: 2:45 – 4:15 AND WEDS : 3:40 – 5:15
Practices are a very important part of your success in basketball. It is up to you to stay focused and give 100% every day. You are the only person that can push yourself to your potential.
General Rules to Follow:
- When we are talking, you are quiet and listening.
- There will be no trash talking of teammates. We are all in this together so we expect encouraging words.
- No swearing is allowed – you and your teammates will be running if we hear any.
- No jewelry of any kind will be worn – you and your teammates will be running if we hear or see any.
- No exposed underwear of any kind will be tolerated. Again, you and your teammates will be running if any player is not properly dressed for practice.
- No cell phones at practice.
- Nice job for reading ALL the handbook!
- You will come into the gym and go right into a pre-designed warm up routine.
Uniforms
Each player will be issued one reversible uniform. The uniforms are not to be worn during practices. Please wash them in cold water and hang them to dry.
Food
What to eat before practice and games:
- Avoid fried foods (they are difficult to digest) especially the day prior to and the day of a game. At all times skip exceptionally greasy foods and any others that upset the system.
- You can never drink enough water. To avoid cramping in the leg muscles, drink at least one bottle of water 1 hour before games and make sure you drink at least one bottle of water during the game. This is a good routine to get into even if you are only practicing.
- Before practice also watch the noon meal closely. In many ways this should be the same as a game meal. To be prepared for a hard afternoon practice, be especially careful not to overeat and to avoid milk at the noon meal.
Games
- Home Games – Players are expected to dress as if they are going to church or a fancy restaurant. Both grade levels need to change into their uniform and begin warm-ups as we await the visiting team. The team that is not playing first is required to sit in a designated area of the bleachers and either be working on homework or cheering for the other Maywood team. No cell phone usage or wandering around campus. Team that plays second has designated clean up.
- Away Games – Players are expected to wear their dark uniform top or a MMS Basketball sweatshirt to school that day. Quickly change into your uniform and board the bus. The team that is not playing first is then required to sit in a designated area of the bleachers and either be working on homework or cheering for the other Maywood team. No cell phone usage or wandering around campus.
- Please note times and dates may change. If this should happen the players will be notified as soon as possible. We ask for your flexibility and understanding. Please note which team plays first on GAME days.
- We play four 8 minute quarters. We are not required to play all athletes. If your player has a problem with playing time, please encourage them to talk to us during the next practice. As a parent, your job is to be supportive of your child by helping them learn how to talk directly to a coach when a problem arises. Please help give them the confidence to handle situations on their own.
Parents/Guardians
Please complete the Transportation Release Form and the Statement of Acknowledgement for the season. If you will be taking your player home from an away game, you will simply sign them out with a coach as long as your Transportation Release Form is on file. If the player is not checked out, we will assume that they are riding the bus home.
We will do our best to let the players know approximately what time the bus will be arriving back at Maywood. Keep in mind we will be arriving back too late for the activity bus, so it is important that players have someone to pick them up. The coaches have other commitments to attend to after practice and games so they cannot wait around to see if your player has a ride home.
Thank you for all of your effort and support! Go Chargers!!
PLEASE PRINT, COMPLETE, AND RETURN TO A COACH
Transportation release form
Our athletes are asked to ride to and from games with the team. If you, or another player’s parent, will periodically be providing transportation home on away matches, we ask that you sign a release form for your player. There are spaces provided to list names and phone numbers of individuals with whom your player may leave matches. We must see parent and player together before you are excused.
In order to assure our athletes safety, we must have a signed release form or your player will ride back to MMS with the team. **Use the back of sheet to add more names/phone# if needed.

Intramural Basketball Information
Basics:
- IM Basketball is to help athletes maintain and experience skills. We are a no cut sport. We will be making sure that all get a chance to play. During games we do lightening rounds using a couple of courts where all teams rotate. We do not keep score.
Practices:
- Schedules will be on the Maywood website and will be coming home after our 1st practice. We will only have a few practices because of gym availability. Practices will be directly after school at 2:40 until 4:15. Athletes can change in the locker room. Please have a water bottle, workout clothes and good shoes. After changing, meet in the Aux gym.
- Everyone should purchase or have a Maywood PE uniform before our first game. 6th graders who have PE will already be purchasing and receiving uniforms before our first game. Those who do not have PE yet can still purchase a uniform online and we will get their sizes the second or third practice. We will wear them for every game.
Final Forms:
- This helps to track student eligibility and to help make communication easier. Please make sure both parent and student forms are completed! Sports physicals need to be current. Prior to our first practice ALL students should have completed the paperwork in FinalForms. Unfortunately, they cannot practice until cleared.
Fees:
- No game time until the sport fee and ASB fee is paid. Please pay online if you have any questions about fees and transferring fees from Varsity/Jr Varsity please ask the bookkeeper. If your Student decides not to play before practices begin please let myself and Ms. Falmoe know so she can remove them from the roster and you will get a refund if applicable.
Absences:
- If a student needs to leave early from a game or practice please notify one of the coaches by email before the game/practice so that their spot can be filled on the team. Students can also share this information with coaches but parent email is preferred. Absences reported to the school is not reported to the coach. We will notify you through Final forms if your student is absent.
Activity Bus:
- This is the link to knowing what activity bus your student should take home. No activity bus on game days.
- We will do our best to help them get on the correct activity bus. They should know their address. Knowing this will save a lot of confusion at the end of practice. Walkers, and those picked up, (Ride arrangements) from practice do not need to be verified, only for away games. Activity bus riders will need to see me to get a bus pass. They will give that pass to the bus driver.
Home Games:
- Start when the other bus arrives approximately 3:00 until 5:00. Parents are always welcome and can park near the Gym and enter on the far side of the main gym. There will no activity bus available for athletes since the game will not be over until later. Home games will be over at 5:00pm and athletes can go home with parents or walk home as needed. We will stay with athletes until all have left school grounds, we appreciate your promptness. Students not playing during a rotation are encouraged to root on their teammates. Locker rooms will be closed until the end of the games. Teams are arriving early to help with transportation.
Away Games:
- Starting at approximately 2:45-3:00 and go until 5:00. We will have a sign out form at all away games to ensure the safety of the kids being picked up. Please have your student identify you and your relationship to sign them out. Papers are to be returned to coaches before leaving with your student. Students always ask to be taken home by another parent! This is only allowed if you've completed a Transportation Release form (in FinalForms). Players cannot go home with others unless an adult has cleared it with a COACH first.
- For away games all athletes will ride the bus to the game. It will be optional for parents to pick up their student or to have them be returned to the school by district bus. For safety reasons Please sign out (only) your student with the coaches at each away game. The bus may return anytime between 6-6:30 depending on traffic. Parents will be called when we are 10 mins from Maywood. Prompt pick up at the track parking lot is greatly appreciated. Home games will be over at 5:00pm and athletes can go home with parents or walk home as needed.
Intramural is about building skills, keeping fit, and having fun. I am looking forward to meeting all of your students and many of you at games.
All this information and more will be given to your athlete at the first practice.
We look forward to having your student participate. See you on the court.

Welcome!
Dear Parents/Guardians and Players,
Welcome to the 2025 soccer season! We are excited to participate in another successful year of Charger soccer. There is a great deal of information that is very important for you to know regarding the procedures of soccer. As such, we have prepared these pages for your convenience. It would be good to have this on hand for a quick reference if you have questions.
We have high expectations for our players. It is their responsibility to be at all practices and games, on time, with correct gear, unless other arrangements have been made with a coach in person. Please read the handbook carefully and make sure you understand the material. If you have any questions regarding the contents, be sure to ask us in practice or send us an email.
Coach Morgan McCorkle

Under district guidelines parents may take their daughter home, as long as they sign out with the coach that they are taking their daughter. Parents cannot take someone else’s daughter home unless the coach has a written note from the parents of the player they are taking home.
We will do our best to let the players know approximately what time the bus will be arriving back at Maywood. Keep in mind we will be arriving back too late for the activity bus so it is important that players have someone to pick them up. As a courtesy to the coaches that must wait for you to pick up your daughter, please be prompt!
AWAY MATCHES: Players that are not picked up on time from the host school will have to ride the bus back to Maywood. No Exceptions!!!!
